Georgetown was named a 2005 All American County in the National Civic League's All American City Award the nation's longest running and most prestigious civic recognition program. The year 2005 was Georgetown's first entry into the contest. We have always been known for our natural beauty, culture, history and southern charm; this recognized our commitment to long range planning to maximize Georgetown County's growth, future prosperity, community service and quality public healthcare.
In 2007, Georgetown was included in Swieitzer and Fields' book The 50 Best Small Southern Towns. The authors define small town as any urban settlement with up to 25,000 inhabitants. The purpose of the book is to provide a body of information for people who, for whatever reasons, were thinking about simplifying their lives by moving to a small town. The criteria is based on specific criteria including size of population, proximity to a small city, access to good healthcare, access to highways and airports, and an enthusiasm for planned growth. Over 150 towns in southern U.S. were visited and researched.
